lamp Programming for Windows 3.x - Interested?
« Thread started on: Aug 10th, 2003, 5:50pm »

I'm interested in starting up a site / group of people interested in programming for Windows 3.x.
The idea would be to share code, utilise the free compilers available, perhaps run competitions for writing a certain type of program within certain constraints (eg a word processor less than 500kb). We could even look at porting some Open Source projects to win3x if practical. (OpenOffice.org might be too big a job...)

As well as learning new skills and honing old ones we could be adding to the list of resources out there and keeping win3x useful.

But I need registrations of interest - so fire away.

Hi everybody. I have came across this forum as I was looking for information about OpenOffice.org partial ports to Windows 3.1, should anything like that exist. My Linux box aside, here at home I have an "old" fully functional 486 equipped with Windows 3.1 and Calmira, which I cannot use just because different document formats have been adopted in present-day PCs. Who uses .wri or .wks today? I also have a copy of Corel Office, which has been made useless by Big Brother's market policies... Thanks Bill.

I see that there is no such thing at present as an OOo port to the 486s under win 3x, and unfortunately I am just an end user, that is I cannot write programs. Therefore I will limit myself to a suggestion. Maybe porting OOo to win 3x would be too much of an effort, but it should still be possible to write some filter to turn .sxw into a win 3.1 format.

Making old windows 3.1 machines able to communicate effectively with linux would mean that you can bring them back into active use, because linux on its part can communicate with the newer flavours of windows, and it could act as a bridge. One could think of a mixed working environment based on linux and old windows 3.1 PCs, where linux boxes are used to import and export documents to the external win 9x/ME/XP/NT world. I firmly believe in the importance of reusing old machines. It is good for the environment, and it would be good for the economies of many third world countries. It is also good for the layman who does not want to be continually paying for updates he/she does not need.

It is already possible to use Write to exchange documents between Linux and windows 3.1. Abiword can understand *wri fairly well and that is a good solution if you speak or write English. If you write a European language which has letters with accents, though, those specific signs will be dropped in AbiWord and replaced with an x, which makes Write/AbiWord exchanges not so easy.

I have never used or even seen a computer with Linux
but I have seen hundreds of windows 3.1 computers
and know many people use them still

windows 3.1 files work just fine with newer windows
95,98,2000,xp etc

and there is a Microsoft Word 97/2000 Viewer for windows 3.1

if linux cant use windows files you might try posting
in a linux programers forum...

some of my windows 3.1 test programs can be found there

and that site url I posted has moved to
http://www.hostultra.com/~watler

I was wondering why I have never seen any windows 3.1
emulators for any system nes,gb,sms,gg,etc...
I have seen the delphi source code for windows 95 emulators
but most of them use directx and since I know nothing about the stuff I cant just copy the code over
any Ideas?

I have a soft spot for old computer systems.

The smaller and lighter the system (windows 3.1), the more fun it seems to be to program software for it, because there is less APIs to learn/master. smiley

I'll have to try to get a hold of windows 3.1.
